Shape Recognition Sorts Pellets

New vision sorting of plastic pellets by shape was introduced at the K 2007 show in Germany last fall by Buhler Sortex of the U.K. (U.S. office in Stockton, Calif.). Shape recognition has been used in the food sector to spot defective vegetables of the same color. It has been adapted to plastics for about six months. The first commercial installation is being tested with a U.S. company to remove double, triple, or quadruple pellets, which can wiggle through vibrating screens. The system uses the same vision sorting camera and lighting as Sortex’s bi-chromatic camera (see p. 64), but with different software.
