The US arm of Rofin-Sinar Laser GmbH, a developer and manufacturer of high-performance laser beam sources and laser-based solutions, recently signed a definitive agreement to acquire US-based Nufern, the world’s largest independent manufacturer of specialty fibres and fibre-laser modules, through a cash transaction. Nufern becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rofin-Sinar’s US-headquartered company RSTI.
The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2008. Further terms of the acquisition were not disclosed at the time of the announcement.
Nufern’s product lines comprises standard fibres and custom fibre solutions, including amplifiers and fibre-laser modules for use in material processing. In June 2007, the company launched its first industrial continuous-wave fibre laser with an output power of 200 W.
Headquartered in East Granby, Connecticut, Nufern markets its products globally to a large OEM customer base through its own sales network, distributors, and the Internet. Nufern will continue to operate as a stand-alone company following its acquisition, and will supply existing customers, including other laser manufacturers.
“This is a very important acquisition for Rofin-Sinar, not only because we are adding new products to our portfolio but also because we are further strengthening our technology base and enhancing the vertical integration needed to economically manufacture fibre lasers,” commented Günther Braun, CEO and president of RSTI.
“The entire Nufern team approaches this milestone transaction with excitement and energy,” added Martin Seifert, president of Nufern. “This transaction facilitates the maturing of our technologies and will propel and support Nufern toward becoming a significant leader in the global fibre-laser market.
