A high-cavitation hot-runner system designed specifically for molding bottle preforms of biodegradable polylactide (PLA) resins is offered by Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd., Bolton, Ont. In 2005, Husky developed a 24-drop hot-runner system in a project with bottle maker Biota Brands of America Inc., PLA resin supplier Cargill Dow (now NatureWorks), and stretch-blow machinery maker SIG Corpoplast, to produce the world’s first compostable water bottle. Husky’s hotrunner system was used with its HyPet machine to mold the preforms using Cargill’s NatureWorks corn-based PLA. Biota produced 12-oz, 0.5-liter, and 1L bottles for its Colorado spring water. Husky says the 24-drop hot-runner system for preforms is a standard offering available for purchase by other molders.
