Delcam Introduces Direct CAM Link to Vericut

Delcam plc has introduced a direct link from its PowerMill CAM system to CGTech’s Vericut software for machine tool simulation and feed rate optimization. Linking the leading CAM and simulation programmes will make it easier for user companies to increase their productivity.

“The status of Vericut is so well established that many companies manufacturing high-value items from expensive materials insist on using its simulations as part of their product development procedures,” explains Mark Forth, Delcam’s PowerMill product marketing manager. “By introducing this direct link, we have made it easier for these companies to check PowerMill programmes in Vericut.

“In addition,” Forth continues, “the same companies often insist that their subcontractors prove out their programmes with Vericut. The direct link will make it easier for existing PowerMill users to add Vericut and so become able to tender for this work.”

Because Vericut’s simulations are based on the G-code output by PowerMill, it provides independent verification of the tool paths generated by the Delcam software. It also offers an added level of security in case there have been operator errors in generating or postprocessing the tool paths.

Another key advantage Vericut gives PowerMill users involves its extensive range of machine tool models, most of which were developed in association with the machine manufacturers. Besides ensuring that the simulations are accurate, having such a comprehensive set of models saves users time they would otherwise spend creating the designs themselves.

Mark Forth cites the recent developments in machined-component manufacture—more-complex components with higher added value; higher levels of automation, including unsupervised machining; much higher cutting speeds—to argue, as many do, that the potential for serious and costly damage to a component, and even the machine tool, has increased. “All these factors make simulation on the computer more important than ever,” he says, “and so make the direct link from PowerMill to Vericut an important addition to our software options.”
