A blow moulding machine, developed for the production of prototype containers, will be used by Ford to manufacture low volume production parts, and for prototypes required in production material.

A 50/E Blow Moulder from MCP Tooling Technologies has been installed at Ford’s European RP Centre in Dunton The machine, which was developed for the production of prototype containers of up to one litre capacity, will be used by Ford to manufacture low volume production parts, and for prototypes required in production material.

Technical specialist at Ford, Richard Wooldridge, said, "This is essential to Ford, as the requirement for ‘make-like-production’ (MLP) prototypes grows every day.

MCP’s blow mould system is therefore a major enabler for the Ford Rapid Manufacturing Department to deliver high quality MLP parts." Containers of up to one litre capacity can be produced using the 50/E machine, from a maximum parison or shot weight of 115gm.

Typical applications are within the cosmetic, food, pharmaceutical and automotive industries The machine is designed to be installed in R and D departments alongside other rapid prototyping equipment, and features an electric drive on the screw, to reduce cycle time and noise levels.

A new higher torque motor also increases the plasticising capability and the range of thermoplastics which can be used.

MCP developed the original MCP 50/E for packaging designers who were searching for a fast means of producing plastic prototype bottles, which did not necessitate expensive downtime of production blow moulders.

High quality prototype bottles and containers can be manufactured for trials or production in PP and HDPE.

When the machine is used in conjunction with moulds made from MCP’s EP Rapid Tooling System, development time can be reduced dramatically – to as little as one week from concept to prototype.
