Automatic Regulation of Bottle Wall Distribution

Optimum material distribution and lightweighting reportedly can be achieved with the first automatic process regulation system for rotary reheat stretch-blow machines. The Equinox system from Sidel Inc., Norcross, Ga., made its debut at the recent K 2007 show in Dusseldorf. It monitors and corrects bottle quality without time-consuming sampling and off-line testing. Equinox measures the bottle base using the Intellimass system from Pressco Technology Inc., Solon, Ohio. The system emits infrared light and measures the absorption, which is proportional to the mass of material present. If the weight/thickness is beyond the preset tolerance, an alarm is issued. Critical machine parameters such as preblow timing and pressure are automatically adjusted until the weight stabilizes and returns to normal—which usually takes about 2 min.
