University of Glasgow mechanical engineering students will soon hone their 3D CAD skills by using SolidWorks® Education Edition software to design everything from race cars to bridges as they prepare for professional careers. SolidWorks will be supplying the 650-year-old school with 200 licenses.
The fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world, the University of Glasgow was the first university in the UK to hire a professor of engineering and the first to create a focused engineering department.
After evaluating leading CAD packages, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the university standardized on 200 licenses of SolidWorks software. The department, in conjunction with the Glasgow School of Art, will begin teaching SolidWorks 3D CAD and SolidWorks Simulation design validation software in its product design engineering degree programme next autumn.
According to Dr. Graham Green, senior lecturer in engineering design in the mechanical engineering department, the only software that could meet the challenging demands placed on the 3D CAD software used by the engineering students in Glasgow’s undergraduate and graduate degree programmes and also satisfy the needs of students taking the joint course in product design engineering was SolidWorks.
SolidWorks Education Edition will give the university’s students a hands-on product development experience that exposes them to concept innovation from design to prototyping and testing. The department will use the software’s prepackaged coursework, curriculum, and student certification platform to support everything from lesson planning to assessment.
“Though steeped in tradition, the University of Glasgow has a progressive approach to incorporating cutting-edge tools in its curricula,” says Marie Planchard, director of worldwide education markets at SolidWorks Corp. “Teaching SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation effectively gives students an advantage when applying for engineering jobs.”
The university relies on authorized SolidWorks reseller TMS CADCentre for ongoing software training, implementation, and support.
