A line of horizontal electric toggle presses developed specifically for lens molding will be introduced at the November International Plastics Fair (IPF) exhibition in Tokyo by Japan Steel Works (JSW Plastic Machinery Inc., Elk Grove Village, Ill.). The new J-AD LS series, will be offered initially in two sizes of about 39 and 59 tons. A middle- to lower-end version provides longer holding times for mobile phones, projectors, or vehicle-mounted cameras. A more robust, higher-end design is offered for Blu-ray discs and high-pixel digital cameras. These units have a high-precision linear guide on the moving platen that minimizes platen drift. They also have JSW’s Injection Weight and Cushion Stability (IWCS) control that keeps resin density uniform. A “soft injection” feature softens sharp changes in cavity pressure during the holding phase to ensure lens surface accuracy. Low-speed injection control helps prevent jetting and flow marks and maintains stable injection speed even when movement is slower than 1.5 mm/sec. The highly polished screw, screw head, check ring and push ring have a coating that prevents burning and contamination.
