François Blateyron, R&D director for the surface metrology company Digital Surf SARL, received a 2008 Normalization Trophy from the UNM, the French union for normalization in the domain of mechanical engineering, for his work on surface metrology performed during service on French and ISO standards committees. The presentation took place at UNM headquarters in Paris on June 17.

Blateyron has been developing surface metrology solutions at Digital Surf since 1992. In 1999, he became a member of the UNM committee responsible for defining surface metrology standards in France. At the same time, he joined ISO technical committee TC213 as one of its French experts.

Blateyron is an active member of work group WG15, which is responsible for advanced filtration techniques defined in ISO 16610, and work group WG16, responsible for defining ISO 25178, the first international standard on 3D areal surface texture.

In receiving the prize, he thanked not only his UNM and ISO colleagues but also the Digital Surf software engineers who implemented new algorithms for ISO 16610 filters and calculated ISO 25178 3D parameters, thereby making an unseen but nonetheless significant contribution to the new standards. As R&D director of Digital Surf, Blateyron has ensured the full integration of the new filters and parameters into software based on Digital Surf’s Mountains technology.

Blateyron has made a major contribution to the diffusion of the new standards at international conferences and in the press. He has also worked closely with the Japan Society for Precision Engineering to explain the new standards and to achieve the participation of Japanese industrialists in ISO.

Chief among his numerous publications popularizing the new standards are “New 3D Parameters and Filtration Techniques for Surface Metrology,” a 2006 Quality Magazine white paper that may be downloaded from the magazine’s website, and “The New 3D Standard ISO 25178,” which appeared in the Autumn/Winter 2007/2008 issue of Surface Newsletter.
