Shaft collars in 316 stainless steel are particularly suitable for food processing, medical and pharmaceutical applications where washdown is required and contamination from corrosion must be avoided.
Ruland has extended its line of corrosion-resistant shaft collars to include 316 stainless steel, yellow zinc plating, and high-strength grade aluminium with an anodized finish A high level of resistance to chloride corrosion makes these shaft collars ideal for marine applications as well.
Ruland exclusively uses screws made from 316 stainless steel (SS) in these collars to ensure the full anti-corrosive benefits of this material.
The yellow zinc plated shaft collars also offer good anti-corrosive properties yet are less expensive than stainless steel alternatives.
All of Ruland s lead-free yellow zinc parts are plated using a RoHS compliant trivalent process instead of the non-compliant hexavalent process.
Zinc plated shaft collars have less holding power than their black oxide finished carbon steel counterparts.
This is owing to the reduced coefficient of friction caused by the zinc plating.
However, said Ruland to manufacturingtalk, the performance of zinc plated parts that utilize plated, high strength alloy steel hardware is still greater than that of stainless steel parts whose holding power suffers from the lower physical properties of stainless steel screws.
* High-strength grade aluminium shaft collars – high-strength grade aluminium shaft collars with an anodised finish have the advantage of being light-weight and having low inertia.
They can withstand the recommended screw torque to provide the holding power similar to carbon steel.
The aluminium collars are supplied with steel screws for higher torque and holding power.
Ruland said that all of its shaft collars are single point faced to ensure perpendicularity and proper alignment.
A precise shaft collar face-to-bore relationship ensures that components are both properly positioned and not tilted on the shaft.
Collar face perpendicularity also ensures even pressure on interfaced components, said Ruland.
The complete range of Ruland shaft collars also includes type 303 SS, black oxide carbon steel and engineered plastics.
The collars are available in one- and two-piece clamp-style designs with bore sizes from 3mm to 80mm.
Shaft collars are part of Ruland’s complete product line, which also includes rigid couplings with precision honed bores and five types of zero-backlash motion control couplings: beam couplings, bellows couplings, oldham couplings, curved jaw couplings and miniature disc couplings.
* About Ruland – Ruland Manufacturing Co, Incorporated has been a precision manufacturer since 1937, making a variety of products including the valve that pressurised the spacesuit of the first American to walk in space.
Ruland’s focus for the past 40 years has been on high performing shaft collars and couplings.
The complete line of products includes shaft collars and rigid couplings, and a full line of motion control couplings: beam couplings, bellows couplings, oldham couplings, miniature disc couplings and zero backlash jaw couplings.
