New software for a fixed array of capacitance gauges provides 100% coverage of webs up to 24-in. wide and a color-coded topographical record of film thickness. The new MultiChannel Array system from Solve-Tech Inc., Wilmington, Del., uses up to 24 two-sided capacitance sensors in a C-frame head. Heads are automatically moved off the web periodically and repositioned to cancel any measurement drift. The user sets upper and lower thickness parameters for individual contour colors. The non-contact gauges can pick up thickness variations down to 0.1 micron, making them comparable in performance to nuclear gauges. An 8-channel array costs about $80,000.
