Plastic injection molding in medical device industry

Medical device products have various shapes, sizes and cost ranges. Some of the lower cost products can be plastic instruments, syringes, disposable gloves, etc., as well as other disposable products used in the hospital environment. You may find that plastic products have replaced many glass products of the past because the plastics available are cheaper and easier to recycle after use.

High performance resins and polymers are used in pharmaceutical grade plastics under high cost planning. These specialized plastics are suitable for ingestion or implantation and can provide a means of controlling drug release. These are often referred to as bioabsorbable materials that can be left in the body without harm. They can stimulate bone and tissue growth, or can be used as soluble vascular stents, making them exciting new opportunities for the plastics industry. Another advantage of polymers in the field of devices is that they can reduce the weight of hand-held medical devices, improve the function of using devices, and reduce production costs.

What common plastics are used in medical grade products?

A common material used in medical devices is polystyrene. It’s a colorless plastic, hard and almost inelastic. Some products use their transparency, while others mix pigments into the resin mixture to provide color change. One of its characteristics is the low cost of the substrate. In addition to simple and lightweight products such as tableware, it is ideal for hard but lightweight products such as Petri dishes, flasks and pipettes. It is not recommended for long-term use in steam or autoclaves involving high temperatures.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a kind of high temperature resistant thermoplastic, which will not degrade in extremely hot, organic or water-based environment. For good wear resistance, it can survive in the dielectric environment, the volume will not fluctuate when heated, and it will perform well in the environment easy to radiate

Polypropylene is another common material used in medical products. It can be used for products requiring autoclave, so it can withstand high temperature for a long time. It can also survive radiation treatment and keep the sample stable without degradation risk.

Because of its low heat resistance, polyethylene is not an ideal choice for heating environment with small change of shape and size. It is commonly used in containers, breathable patches and packaging films.

Polycarbonate is also an injection molding plastic, usually found in medical devices. It is a solid material that can withstand high impact, provides transparent translucent material, is stable under hot and cold conditions, is resistant to UV degradation, and has flame retardancy. Temperature stability and strength make it an ideal choice for high pressure syringes, centrifugal force separators, blood filter housings and other products.
