WEB EXCLUSIVE Ball Corp., Broomfield, Colo., is the first PET bottle maker in North America to use the Plasmax 12D barrier coating for wine and beer bottles. Artisan Wine Co., Oliver, B.C., launched its new Painted Turtle wines in 750-cc PET barrier bottles with an aluminum screw cap. They reportedly weigh only 10% as much as glass. Ball is also using the Plasmax coating on 12-oz PET beer bottles from Anchor Brewing, San Francisco, as a replacement for multilayer PET. The plasma vapor-deposition coating system, from KHS Plasmax GmbH in Hamburg, Germany (a sister company to Corpoplast), applies a silicon-oxide coating less than 0.1 microns thick inside PET bottles.
