Aluminium Mould Alloys Offer Strength in Plastics Forming Applications

With constant support provided by European research centres, Alcan Aerospace, Transportation and Industry has developed a full range of aluminium alloys specifically for mould making. These plate products are good for applications from blow moulding to injection moulding and even including resin-transfer moulding (RTM).

High-strength Certal® SPC and Alumold® 500 plates have proved their worth for medium to long production runs. These materials offer high strength, easy swarf removal, and high shape stability both during and after machining. Besides this, both have a homogeneous metallurgical structure through the entire cross section, a high thermal conductivity that minimizes process cycle times, and a surface suitable for various treatments. For the injection-moulding of such plastics as polyethylene, ABS, polyamide, PETP, and PPO, among others, the company recommends its medium-strength Fibral® plates for prototyping, as well as for short production runs.

Alcast®, a high-strength cast material especially suitable for prototype moulds, thermoforming moulds, and RTM-type processes, is supplied as cast, sawn, and heat-treated slab in AA7035 alloy (AlZnMgCu), in thicknesses up to 600 mm, and beyond in special cases. It is produced to a custom-designed and patented alloy composition with extremely low quench sensitivity. The resulting product offers a very low residual porosity, a fine and uniform grain structure, and high mechanical properties throughout the thickness, as well as minimal residual stresses.
